The hull of
the M163 Vulcan† to be tracked M113 troop
carrier due to its low cost and its reliability has proved a valuable platform
for numerous anti-tank weapon systems, missile and anti-aircraft tow as in the
case of this version.
Vulcan† was developed around the 20-mm
Vulcan cannon. A rotating barrels (which allows a very high rate of fire: 6000
rounds per minute) was born to airborne, the whole system is based on the
weapon turret arranged in a simple open and the feed mechanism for ammunition
inside the vehicle . In addition to air defence the M163 is also used to support
the infantry with the greater fire-power.
beginning, the main drawback of the M163 was its small calibre and lightweight
shells, which limited its effective range. Early M50 series ammunition
exacerbated the situation, but the M163 was still comparable to the
contemporary Soviet ZSU-23-4; although the Russian ZSU fired a larger shell (23
mm rather than 20 mm), the M163 had a higher muzzle velocity providing a
similar effective range and a lower rate of fire.
